Introduction
Aquest portal recull un llibre d’història local. És un esforç sense ànim de lucre ni interès comercial d’un grup de mallorquins amb el fi d’aproximar la gent d’avui als orígens històrics de Binissalem, una vila del segle XIV, fundada després de la conquesta de Mallorca pel rei Jaume I, el ‘rei En Jaume’, de Catalunya-Aragó. Avui és un poble encara petit, normal i especial pels seus veïns, que pensem que mereix ser conegut millor a través de la seva història.
Sense els avenços en el coneixement de la història de Mallorca de l’últim mig segle hauria estat impossible harmonitzar suficients dades fiables per fer un retrat amb tants detalls. Sense els ordinadors i sobre tot Internet, hauria estat impossible confeccionar una història com aquesta i, sobre tot, posar-la a l’abast de tothom.
En aquest treball hi han col·laborat gent corrent d’aquí: arqueòlegs (Ferran, Tina i Llorenç); geògrafs (Toni i Maria Magdalena Pons); un professor jubilat (Toni Pol); una traductora-intèrpret (Maria de Mar); un dissenyador gràfic (JoanGeremi); un filòleg català (Tomeu); i un cronista local (Pau Reynés), entre altres, que han dedicat hores, setmanes i anys al projecte. Des de l’inici hi he estat jo, una nòmada, establida a Binissalem ara fa quaranta anys.
Esperam que la nostra història sigui del seu gust.

En aquest treball hem optat per no normalitzar les cites literals escrites en Català antic amb la intenció de respectar al màxim el missatge original de l’autor. A més, atès que aquest és un llibre d’història, consideram que la història i evolució de la llengua catalana són aspectes prou rellevants com per ser inclosos en el nostre relat, en tant que l’expressió escrita no és més -ni menys- que el reflex d’un pensament.

In case you have stumbled on this website in a language, Catalan, you had never heard of, let me explain. Catalan is a Romance language, derived from Latin, and at least as old as French and Spanish. It was the language of sailors and traders in the late Middle Ages, when the Mediterranean could still claim to be ‘the centre of the earth’ from where explorers and merchants fanned out in all directions. Christopher Columbus spoke and read Catalan; for a navigator it was inevitable then. It isn’t a particularly easy language to learn, but is still today an official tongue in north-eastern Spain; in Catalunya, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.
Our cultural roots are common to the whole Mediterranean area: the classic texts of Greece and Rome, picked up and built upon by Islamic mathematicians and doctors and astronomers, always accompanied by the Judaic tradition personified in Jewish scholars, merchants, interpreters and entrepreneurs who were everywhere throughout the region.
This website is a history book put together by a group of people in Binissalem, a small town in the centre of the island of Mallorca. Taking advantage of the work of historians and documentarians of recent years, as well as earlier chroniclers and archivists, we hope to bring alive the story of the creation of an ordinary -and extraordinary– town, which began with the invasion of Mallorca in 1229 and 1230, by King Jaume I of Catalunya-Aragon, supported by his knights, vassals, and cities with the enthusiastic collaboration of the Catholic church.
The project would have been impossible before computers and more especially the internet, which has put into our hands myriad sources of knowledge and unimaginable technical tools, and allows us to communicate with the whole world as easily as with our neighbours next door. Even if you cannot read our text, please enjoy the illustrations, most of which date back to the eleventh to fifteenth centuries A.D.
